Frequently Asked Questions
What platform(s) am I allowed to build for during the competition?
You can build on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7,HTML, Flash, Unity Web Player. Keep in mind that any game that does not build and run on a mobile device will NOT be eligible for the Top 3, so do so only as a last resort.

Why are there no HUBs near my area?
Unfortunately we couldn't get HUBs in every city in Canada, however if you or your school is interested in hosting groups feel free to contact gcappathon@xmgstudio.com

How many people can be on my team?
You can have up to 4 members in one team. Feel free to work by yourself too!

Does everyone have to be a programmer?
Absolutely not! You can have anyone on your team that is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution. You may need someone for art, sound effects, programming, design, storyboarding or one of many other roles.

Can I work from home?
No. You MUST be at the 'HUB' for a minimum of 14 hours during the 48 hour competition. Why would you want to miss out on all the fun at the HUBs?

What does it cost?
Nothing! It's absolutely free to compete!

What are the chances that I'm going to get published?
XMG partners with the top three winning games to polish and publish their games in the app store. All other teams are strongly encouraged to self-publish their games.

Do I get to keep the rights to my game?
XMG owns the IP for the top three teams and works with these teams in partnership to polish and publish the games. All teams that compete in the GCA have the option to exercise an opt-out clause and retain ownership of their games. Winning teams may also do this, but will not be awarded any prize money as a result.
All teams that are not awarded prize money have the option to exercise an opt-out clause and retain ownership of their games.

Do I have to stay overnight?
You can stay at the location overnight if you wish, however it is not a requirement.

Can I start late?
Sure, just as long as you end on time!

Can I submit a game that I have been working on prior to the competition? Can I bring some code with me?
No. Doing so will disqualify your team from the competition (and we will know if you do).

Will there be food? Vegetarian options?
Contestants are responsible for feeding themselves throughout the competition weekend.

Do I have to be a student to compete?
Yes. In order to be eligible you must be currently enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution.
